Our mission is to help people enjoy healthier lives

World leader

Founded in 1923, Tanita Corporation is an ethical healthcare product manufacturer.  The Company’s core objective is to research and bring to market technologies that facilitate health monitoring, both for professionals and for the health-conscious public.

Today, Tanita is a world leader in the field of Precision Electronic Scales and Body Composition Analysers.  With sales of more than 25 million units in Japan alone, Tanita has proven its superior technology, unique design and high manufacturing standards; earning ISO 9001 certification, CE marking, NAWI, MDD, membership of the JQA (Japanese Quality Association) and FDA clearance.

The Company’s international headquarters are located in Tokyo, Japan, with manufacturing facilities in Japan and China.  It also maintains sister companies in the USA, China and Hong Kong and a European Head Office in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Creating a new market category

After building a highly successful business manufacturing bathroom scales, Tanita focused its developmental research on the links between weight and health. Following extensive research to establish the relationship between excess body fat, heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers; Tanita introduced the world’s first Integrated Body Fat Scale to medical research professionals in 1992.  Using this same technology, Tanita then developed the world’s first Body Fat Monitor Scale for personal use in 1994.

Over the years, Tanita’s accuracy, innovation and durability has set the gold standard for Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) scales and monitors.  Backed by extensive clinical research and a Medical Advisory Board of independent researchers and consultants, its products are trusted by physicians, clinicians and health and fitness experts worldwide.

Technology innovator

Tanita continues to lead the way in the scale category for both its personal and professional models. Recent innovations include being the first to market with ‘segmental body composition analysis’ -  differentiating between fat and muscle in each limb - and an impressive array of radio wireless products that employ ANT+, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi protocols for remote monitoring and trend analysis.

Commitment to scientific excellence

The Tanita Best Weight Research and Development Centre

In 1990, the Tanita Best Weight Research and Development Centre was established.  The Centre, located in Tokyo, studies the relationship between a person’s weight and their well-being by analysing the impact of physical activity, psychological stress and sociological factors on their medical and nutritional conditions.

The Tanita Medical Advisory Board (TMAB)

As part of Tanita’s goal to remain at the forefront of medical-related technology and health initiatives, the Tanita Medical Advisory Board (TMAB) was established 12 years ago. TMAB consists of a team of independent senior research scientists, obesity and nutrition experts from all over the world who advise on the scientific development of BIA technology, to ensure the highest accuracy is achieved.  The Board is also tasked with ensuring that Tanita products, communication and information are ethically and scientifically accurate prior to production and distribution.

Strong scientific validation

Tanita BIA technology is regularly used in independent scientific research and has contributed to a wide portfolio of validation studies specialising in adult and paediatric obesity, weight management and lifestyle disease.
